Storytime–Stories about Farms

Yee-haw! I’ve always done an Animal storytime at least once a semester, but this is the first year I did a separate farm storytime. Learning about farm animals is really important for a few reasons. Animals sounds are the building blocks for language and complex phonic sounds, so that’s important. But learning about farm life specifically teaches about animals that most people interact with on a daily basis. It teaches that animals need to be cared for, and that, for some of us, these animals are food or help produce food.

Stories

No shortage of good options here. If you wanted something interactive you can do “Huff and Puff” by Claudia Rueda. For something that focuses on animal sounds, you can do “Do Cows Meow?” by Salina Yoon. Another crowd favorite is “Old MacDonald Had a Truck” by Steve Goetz, but I usually save that for transportation storytime.

Rhymes

Five Little Ducks

Five little ducks
Went out one day.
Over the hills and far away.
Mother Duck said,
“Quack quack quack quack”
But only four little ducks
Came waddling back.

Four little ducks
…you get it 🙂

Songs

There’s a lot of options here obviously, you can do some of the classics like “OldMacDonald Had a Farm” or “B-I-N-G-O”, but I did this one, and it was a lot of fun to do the motions and talk about farm chores.

This is the Way

This is the way we milk the cow.
Milk the cow, milk the cow.
This is the way we milk the cow
So early in the morning.

….sheer the sheep
….sweep the barn
….scrub the pig

Activity

So I made this sheet and drew all the animals and farm stuff myself! I don’t like doing JUST coloring sheets if possible, I like to add other dimensions for my kiddos that need extra stimulation, or for families to interact and help out with. So of course if a kid just treats this as a coloring sheet, that’s totally fine. But this sheet employs some critical thinking and problem solving skills, and working on some motor skills to draw and make specific things. Hope you like it!
