Lego Challenge–Big Build, Small Copy

One of my favorite shows of all time is Taskmaster, where contestants get assigned different silly tasks to complete within a time limit. Often times there are two parts tasks, and so that was the inspiration for this one. This one was a little bit like Build a Megafig challenge I did awhile back but there’s a bit of a twist on it.

So after going over rules, I told kids that this would be a two part challenge. They were told that they could build anything they want but it just had to be on one of the big green baseplates, and they would have 30 minutes to build, which is about half of our normal time. I also encouraged them to build big since it would help them later. I finally told them there was a second part to the challenge, BUT it was a surprise.

So at that 30-minute mark, I told my kids that, without breaking apart your first build, what they were going to be doing next is making copies of what they just made, BUT they would have to use a SMALL green baseplate. And so the REAL challenge is now time management but also SCALE. Can you scale down what you built?? I finally told them that they can add or refine their big build, but it would need to be reflected in the small build now. And I ended on that this is just for fun and a challenge and to do their best.

About 1/2 of my kiddos really got into this one, the other 1/2 just kept doing their big build. That’s fine. It was mostly the older kiddos that got into it, so if your group skews young than this challenge might be too hard. But look at the details on this example. Big horse, small horse obviously. But then there’s other details like big wheel, small wheel. Big broom in the background, small broom. Then there’s the big structures like the cave and the arch is a great example of how to scale things down. So overall this one was successful.
